WildlifeWhile are wildlife is very limited, you may have the oppertunity to see and learn some of the animals below. These mischievous animals are one of Barbados most delightful charms, the Barbados Green Monkey. The run wild throughout the island mostly in the parishes of St. John, St. Andrew and St. Joseph in family troops, where there is vast agricultural land mass and forested areas. They initially came with the slave ships from Senegal and The Gambia roughly 350 years ago. Environmental changes have occurred since 75 generations of the monkey have come and gone. Therefore the Green Monkeys characteristics differ from there African ancestors.
The Black Belly Sheep are natives to Barbados and considered a popular breed, due to the fact that they are well adapted to the tropical weather, extremely reproductive and need very little maintence. They are a cross of African hair sheep and Europeen wooled breed. The black belly sheep is exported all around the Caribbean and Malaysia. The US also have great interest in the black belly sheep, where they are used to strengthen and diversify other breeds. The Black Belly Sheep are also used as a food source for its delicate tastes and they are low in fat! Hare Rabbit be lucky and see these fast animals bounce accross the cart road. The Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles are friendly and sociable creatures that can be seen playing and feeding along the inshore reefs. This creates a great opportunity to swim amongst the turtles! They are very accustomed to humans and are so tame that you can reach out and touch their shell!
Flying Fish are incredible creatures that have the ability to glide through the air up to 30-40 meters at 55kmph! Once they become airborne, they spread there pectoral fins and appear to be flying. Most importantly, they taste delicious!
